My Experience at An Cabhail Mhór, Killinaboy, Co. Clare – Hot-Mixed Lime Mortar and Conservative Repair of Stone Walls
September 6, 2018Nestled in the rolling countryside of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Fyvie Castle is a place of immense historical and architectural beauty. But beyond its stately walls and well-manicured gardens, the castle holds a secret—a dark and mysterious legend tied to what are known as The Weeping Stones. During my visit to this enchanting castle, I had the chance to explore not only its impressive history but also the eerie legend surrounding these infamous stones.
In this post, I’ll share my experience visiting Fyvie Castle, with a special focus on the legend of The Weeping Stones and how the lore continues to captivate visitors and locals alike.
1. The History of Fyvie Castle
Fyvie Castle is one of Scotland’s most iconic and well-preserved castles, with a history that dates back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, it has passed through the hands of several noble families, including the Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon, and Forbes-Leith families. Each of these families contributed to the expansion and transformation of the castle, resulting in the impressive structure that stands today—a magnificent blend of Scottish baronial and French architectural styles.
From its grand stone turrets to its luxurious interiors, Fyvie Castle is a testament to the wealth and power of the families who once called it home. Visitors can explore richly decorated rooms, priceless artworks, and artifacts that tell the story of Scotland’s aristocracy. But what truly sets Fyvie Castle apart from other historic estates is its connection to legends and the supernatural—none more famous than the tale of The Weeping Stones.
2. The Legend of The Weeping Stones
The legend of The Weeping Stones is one of the most enduring and mysterious stories associated with Fyvie Castle. According to local folklore, the stones are part of a curse placed on the castle and its inhabitants. The story begins in the 13th century, when Thomas the Rhymer, a famous Scottish prophet and seer, visited Fyvie. After being turned away from the castle, he reportedly cursed it, stating that the castle would never thrive, and that it would suffer until three stones—The Weeping Stones—were found and returned to their rightful place.
These stones, according to the legend, were part of the original foundation of the castle but had been removed during one of its many renovations. Since their removal, it is said that a series of tragedies and misfortunes have befallen the castle’s inhabitants, including the premature deaths of several family members and other unexplained occurrences.
The curse further suggests that one stone is buried within the castle grounds, one lies beneath the nearby River Ythan, and the third remains lost. Until all three are recovered, the castle is said to be doomed to misfortune. Adding to the eeriness of the legend is the claim that visitors can sometimes hear the stones “weeping”—a chilling reminder of their power and the sorrow they are believed to bring.
3. Experiencing The Weeping Stones
During my visit to Fyvie Castle, I was keen to learn more about the story of The Weeping Stones. As I walked through the castle’s magnificent halls and gazed upon the centuries-old architecture, it was hard to imagine the dark curse that supposedly lurked beneath its grandeur. However, the castle’s guides, well-versed in the local legends, were eager to share their knowledge of The Weeping Stones and the many strange happenings that have been linked to the curse.
While wandering the grounds, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of mystery in the air. The beautiful, peaceful landscape around the castle seems at odds with the ominous legend, and yet the story of The Weeping Stones adds an unmistakable layer of intrigue to the entire experience. Whether you believe in the curse or not, there is something undeniably captivating about the idea of these hidden stones, waiting to be discovered and restored to their rightful place.
Though no one has ever definitively found the stones, the legend continues to attract visitors from all over the world. Many come to Fyvie Castle not only for its architectural splendor but also in search of the supernatural, hoping to catch a glimpse of a weeping stone or perhaps experience one of the many ghostly apparitions said to haunt the castle’s halls.
4. The Hauntings of Fyvie Castle
The Weeping Stones are not the only source of supernatural activity at Fyvie Castle. The castle is widely regarded as one of the most haunted places in Scotland, with numerous reports of ghost sightings and unexplained phenomena. Among the most famous of these hauntings is the spirit of Dame Lilias Drummond, the wife of Sir Alexander Seton, one of the castle’s former owners.
Dame Lilias was allegedly starved to death by her husband after she failed to produce a male heir, and it is said that her ghost still roams the castle, particularly in the area known as the Green Lady’s Room. Visitors and staff alike have reported hearing scratching noises on the walls and floors, as well as seeing her ghostly figure wandering through the halls.
In addition to Dame Lilias, other ghostly presences have been detected within the castle, including strange mists, cold spots, and inexplicable sounds. Many of these sightings are believed to be linked to the curse of The Weeping Stones, adding to the overall sense of mystery and foreboding that surrounds the estate.
5. Reflecting on the Legend
Visiting Fyvie Castle and learning about The Weeping Stones was a deeply fascinating experience. The combination of architectural beauty, historical significance, and eerie legend made the visit feel like stepping into a different world—a place where the past is very much alive, and where myths and stories continue to shape the way people experience the castle.
The tale of The Weeping Stones serves as a reminder of the power of local folklore in keeping history alive. Whether or not the stones exist, the story has become an integral part of Fyvie Castle’s identity, enriching the visitor experience and ensuring that the castle remains a place of curiosity and wonder.
